Learning outcomes

- Develop specialist knowledge in areas of the historical discipline and understand the issues involved - Learn how to conduct a research question in history and master the tools and working methods specific to the discipline - Learn the techniques of analysis and interpretation of sources specific to contemporary history

Objectives

At the end of the course, the student will be able to : - Design a coherent and relevant heuristic approach to a question of contemporary Belgian history - to know the main places where sources concerning contemporary history are kept in Belgium

Content

Knowledge and critical use of 1° the different types of sources concerning the contemporary history of Belgium 2° the public and private archives and libraries in Belgium 3° the working tools enabling them to be located, accessed and used. Chronological framework: from 1830 to the present day.


Teaching methods

Lecture with a presentation and analysis of the different types of sources for the contemporary period followed by library exercises on the different working tools. Individual work on a contemporary history topic requires visits to archive centres in Belgium.

Evaluations

Oral examination. The student must propose a coherent, complete and realistic heuristic approach to the study of a specific theme in contemporary Belgian history.
