Course 2023-2024

Chemistry and Life Physics [SVETB198]

  • 3 credits
  • 5h+25h
  • 2nd quarter
Language of instruction: French / Français

Learning outcomes

The student will have learned to apply the concepts of physics and chemistry taught in the framework of the teaching units SPHY B112, SPHY B113, SPHY B114, SCHI B103, SCHI B106 to living animals. They will be able to explain the physical and/or chemical basis of a situation encountered in a living animal, such as the transmission of an electrical signal during a nerve impulse or the impact of pulmonary gas exchange on blood pH.

Objectives

Understand and apply basic physics and chemistry in the living world. Establish links between materials, including those essential for understanding the structures involved in the physical or chemical phenomena studied.

Content

Applications of chemistry and physics to the living animal.

Teaching methods

Learning paths illustrating each application are available via WebCampus. The student progresses at his/her own pace through a learning pathway where he/she has the possibility to self-assess by means of multiple choice questions. It is up to the student to explore the physical and chemical aspects of each situation; the learning pathway only aims to provide an application of the underlying concepts that need to be mastered.

Evaluations

An oral examination is organised in the June and August semester where the student is expected to present the answer to an application question in chemistry or physics to a veterinary teacher and a chemist or physicist teacher. The student will orally present the answer to an application question in chemistry or physics. They must be able to produce accurate diagrams of the organs and tissues studied in each course.
