Learning outcomes

The aim of the practical work is to help the student to understand and assimilate the theoretical course. They also aim to familiarise the student with the operation of some measuring instruments (multimeter, frequency meter, oscilloscope...). The aim is also to teach the student to perform, present and interpret correctly the experiments described in the practical work manual.

Content

1. Magnetic field measurement, Hall probe. 2. Gamma radioactivity. 3. Alternating currents: phase shifts, Lissajous curves, rectification. 4. Alternating currents: differentiator and integrator circuit, full wave rectification, filtering and stabilisation, Doppler effect, speed of sound. 5. Resonance in electricity. 6. The transistor as an amplifier 7. The junction field effect transistor (JFET) 8. X-ray properties and fluorescence. 9. Fourier analysis, normal modes, coupled systems. 10. Wave optics experiments with laser beam. 11. Experiments using a Michelson interferometer. 12. Normal modes and dispersion relation in mechanics. 13. Activation and radioactive decay. 14. Study of a Carnot machine and a heat pump. 15. Operation of some digital circuits.


Teaching methods

Carrying out experiments described in the practical manual and on the faculties' intranet. Take measurements and analyse the results. Writing an experiment report.

Evaluations

Students are required to attend the practical sessions. The mark for the first term (Q1) consists of a MCQ and the evaluation of a report on a manipulation carried out in Q1. The mark for the second term (Q2) is mainly the result of an oral examination: the student redoes part of the experiments carried out during the year (Q1 and Q2) and presents the results to the examiner. In addition, the final mark takes into account the mark of Q1, a MCQ as well as the evaluation of a report of a manipulation performed in Q2. The mark for Q1 is therefore a partial mark, whereas the mark for Q2 is an overall mark (material from Q1 and Q2).
