Course 2024-2025

Fundamentals of geology. Geological fieldwork [SGOLB111]

  • 2 credits
  • 0h+21h
  • 2nd quarter
Language of instruction: French / Français
Teacher: Collinet Max

Objectives

Upon completion of the Teaching Unit, the students will be able to :

  • Identify different rocks in the field, describe them and take structural measurements (strike and dip)
  • Organize efficiently their observations in a field notebook for the purpose of preparing a report describing the geology of a region

Content

Three one-day field trips organised on a Saturday with two supervisors who support the students in making their own observations and interpretations.

Co-requisites

Fondements de la géologie (minéralogie, pétrologie, tectonique des plaques) [SGOLB101]

Teaching methods

At each stop, the students first observe and describe the rocks on their own. The two supervisors then provide additional information to help the students work out the geological processes that have marked the history of the region.

Evaluations

A report is due a few weeks after each of the three field trips.

The field notebook will be evaluated to ensure that the reports are based (at least in part) on the students' personal observations and note-taking.

The final grade reflects the quality of the three reports and associated field notes (1/3 of the points for each field).
