Course 2023-2024

Histology of cells and tissues - partim [SBIOB231]

  • 2 credits
  • 20h
  • 1st quarter
Language of instruction: French / Français

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will be able to :
• Understanding the links between structure and function at the level of cells and their extracellular matrix
• Master the characteristics of the basic cell types (epithelial, connective, contractile, nervous and blood cells) and
the tissues they comprise
• Master the vocabulary specific to histology

Objectives

The objectives of the course are to:
• To understand the structure-function links at the scale of the cell and its extracellular matrix,
• To familiarise the student with the essential cell types (epithelial, support, contractile and nerve cells, as well as
blood cells) and the tissues they form, based on the complementarity between theoretical courses, practical work and
multimedia tools made available

Content

After an introduction to histology, the course reviews the basic cell types and associated tissues:
• Epithelial cells and associated tissues (adhesion to the extracellular matrix, intercellular cohesion and
communication, classification of epithelia, coating and glandular epithelia, representative examples of exocrine and
endocrine glands)
• Supporting or connective cells and tissues (extracellular matrix, adhesion, different types of connective cells and
tissues including classical connective tissues, adipose tissues, cartilage tissues, bone tissues and blood)
• Contractile cells and tissues (striated skeletal, striated cardiac and smooth muscle tissue).
• Nerve cells and tissues.

Teaching methods

• Coloured diagrams are drawn on the board and discussed again on more complex diagrams, sections or
micrographs presented on slides or transparencies. Students have access via WebCampus to the slides/transparencies
presented during the course. Reference books are recommended (Human Histology, Stevens & Lowe; Histology, A Text
and Atlas with Correlated Cell and Molecular Biology, Wojciech P).
• During the course, students are regularly questioned.
• Examples of pathological histology are given for illustrative purposes at the end of the chapters (more for
information and general knowledge).
• A multimedia tool is also available (http://www.histology.be).

Evaluations

The theoretical examination is oral. There is no practical exam.
The student has ± 60 minutes to prepare the answers to the questions. The student is strongly encouraged to use this
preparation time to illustrate the answers with relevant diagrams. During the oral examination, the student is continuously
questioned and assessed on his/her ability to go through the course.
The student must be able to:
• Establish links between structure and function of each (sub)cellular or tissue structure.
• Compare different structures, identify and explain similarities as well as key differences.
• Define a series of keywords and select the most relevant information for each keyword.
