Objectives

The objective of the introductory course in archaeometry is to provide future heritage professionals with an overview of the methods of scientific analysis of archaeological remains and works of art, and to train them in the basic concepts and vocabulary of the various disciplines covered. It aims to enable archaeologists and art historians to collaborate with scientists in order to carry out relevant research, methodologically adapted to their subject and to the scientific questions, and with a view to optimal interpretation of the results.

Content

The course focuses on the methods and technologies of the exact sciences and earth and life sciences applied to the study and understanding of cultural heritage (archaeological remains, objects and works of art). The different methods of analysis will be approached according to their finalities: to prepare the field research, to date, to characterize materials, techniques, to identify the origins, to identify the uses, to characterize the osseous and vegetable remains, to reconstitute the environment and to treat the data.


Teaching methods

Lectures with power point presentation. Visit to an archaeometry laboratory.
