Course 2024-2025

Animal Physiology II [SVETB219]

  • 2 credits
  • 15h+8h
  • 2nd quarter
Language of instruction: French / Français

Learning outcomes

The student will have learned about the functioning of the endocrine system and the digestive system. They will be able to describe the function, role and regulation of each system. He will have learned the basic investigative methods for assessing the proper functioning of each system.

Objectives

To know the location, structure, function, roles and regulation of the major physiological systems. To be able to integrate a given system into the organism and to reason in relation to its functioning.

Content

The different systems will be approached in a successive way and will be articulated with the other teaching units. Each system will be addressed in a theoretical course as well as through tutorials and practical work.

Teaching methods

The different systems will be approached in a successive way and will be articulated with the other teaching units. Each system will be addressed in a theoretical course as well as through tutorials and practical work. The theoretical course is given by the teacher in an auditorium (at a distance if the health situation requires it). The course is intended to be as interactive as possible. Slides, of which students can download a pdf version via WebCampus, serve as a basis. Diagrams detailing certain processes as well as summary diagrams are constructed on the board (or will be provided remotely if necessary). Tutorials and practical work will be organised in groups according to a set schedule. The students will have prepared these sessions from the course notes and (for some practical sessions) a textbook. Some tutorials and practical work are given in English.

Recommended readings

Course notes (pdf of slides shown in the course) and practical manuals are available via WebCampus. Recommended reference books are "Physiology of Domestic Animals" (Sjastad) and "Textbook of Veterinary Physiology" (Cunningham). These books are available in the university library. Their acquisition is not necessary for the study of the course.
