Course 2024-2025

Internship [SPHYM233]

  • 15 credits
  • quarter
Language of instruction: French / Français
Teacher: HAYE Emile

Objectives

The objective of this internship is to enable the student to work in an environment other than the one they have been studying in, to distance themselves from their studies, to apply their knowledge, and to acquire the independence necessary to carry out a scientific or technical project. To achieve this, the student will work in a company, research center, foundation, hospital, or other organization outside of their university. They will integrate into an existing team and be assigned a topic for which they will take responsibility. In addition to the typical academic qualities, they will need to demonstrate a good understanding of the issues, a sense of responsibility, the ability to synthesize information, and initiative, as described in the evaluation section.

Teaching methods

Note: If the intern intends to apply for a scholarship or any other financial support from an organization to fund their stay abroad (mobility scholarship), they must contact the Student Mobility Coordinator (Carole PAYEN, mobility.sciences@unamur.be) and the host organization within a timeframe that allows for the submission of the necessary documents. This may require several months' preparation, prior to the start of the academic year. It is important to contact the mobility department (mobility.sciences@unamur.be) in addition to the teacher (emile.haye@unamur.be). Attendance at information meetings is also important.

The student must find an internship themselves. The physics department teacher or secretary can provide a list of companies/institutions and contacts (internship supervisors) for students. This list is not exhaustive, and an intern may find an internship location on their own, possibly with the help of a professor. Non-research laboratory internships should be prioritized.

The intern will contact the internship location and their supervisor to agree on a topic. They will then validate the topic with the holder of this teaching unit. Any necessary contact will be made with the internship supervisor to refine the topic. This step is essential to identify situations in which the intern would be considered only as expendable labor. Any potential confidentiality issues will also be presented and resolved.

Once the location and topic have been approved by the holder of this teaching unit, the intern will communicate the information to the department secretary, who will encode it and transfer it to the Student Mobility Coordinator at UNamur.

The internship should last for 2 continuous months, usually during February-March-April. It is possible to receive a scholarship, each of which has specific characteristics (amount, duration, etc.):

• Outside of Europe: FAME scholarship.
• In Europe: intervention from the Erasmus+ program ("Internship Scholarship").
• In non-French-speaking Belgium (outside of FWB): Erasmus "Belgica." The mobility department manages the conventions and scholarship applications.

Instructions for the report and presentation

  • 10 pages maximum (excluding appendices that are not necessary for understanding the report)
  • Related to the entire or part of the project assigned to the intern: the aim is to show that the intern is capable of integrating into a new or ongoing project and making a valuable contribution. If there are additional tasks that are not related to the main project, there is no need to include them.
  • The report must provide context and clearly specify the aim and methodology used to complete the project. A comparison of the results/other information found in the literature or on the market or from competitors, etc., should also be included.
  • The document must be submitted in pdf format to the teaching unit holder and department secretary on the last day of the exam session.
  • The presentation will take place at the beginning of the session. It will be 15 minutes long and in the form of a PowerPoint presentation, sent to the UE supervisor the day before the presentation.
  • The UE supervisor will ask questions, and each student should ask at least one question during a presentation throughout the day. So everyone must attend all presentations. At the end of each presentation, a designated student will have to ask a question. Of course, everyone can ask questions

Grading (see grading scale in the vademecum):

• 50% by the internship supervisors (promoter/co-promoter/supervisor) (text and work done, final grade given by the promoter before the defense)

• 50% by the jury, excluding the supervisor (text and defense)

Remarks:

The internship supervisor can participate in the presentation. Obviously, the secretariat must be notified in advance.

If necessary, the presentation can be made to a small group of people (at least the UE supervisor) who have signed a confidentiality agreement. However, a light report or presentation cannot be justified on the pretext of confidentiality. If a confidentiality agreement is required, the student must inform the UE supervisor in time and organize it (in general, the basic document is that of the company where the internship was carried out).

The intern represents UNamur at the internship site: in addition to their intellectual and scientific abilities, the evaluation by the internship supervisor also includes the following criteria:

  1. Understanding of problems
  2. Sense of responsibility
  3. Synthesis skills
  4. Initiative
  5. Method and efficiency in work
  6. Value of work done
  7. Integration and adaptation skills, human relations
  8. Attendance and punctuality
  9. Clarity in oral expression
  10. Report writing (including the internship report)
