Course 2024-2025

Spectral profiles [SPHYM215]

  • 3 credits
  • 22h+8h
  • 1st quarter
Language of instruction: French / Français
Teacher: Lepere Muriel

Learning outcomes

The first objective of this course is to provide the basis for understanding the spectral profiles of infrared absorption lines. Several elaborate profiles are then described. The second objective is to highlight the importance of using very elaborate spectral profiles. This is done through different application examples.

Content

This course is a presentation of the major spectral profiling models currently in use. The basics describing the physical phenomena involved are first described. Then, several theoretical models are explained. Finally, numerous applications illustrating the use of these spectral profiles are given, showing the importance of these studies for both fundamental and applied reasons. The equations of the studied spectral profiles are given, without however establishing them analytically. The focus is on the physical phenomena responsible for these spectral profiles.

Teaching methods

Presentation on the board and in a Powerpoint.

Evaluations

Presentation of a paper (10 minutes oral presentation in front of the whole class and a manuscript of maximum 10 pages) on the comparison between two spectral profiles described in the literature. Two articles are provided by the teachers. The mark will take into account the physical approach of the reasoning and the clarity of the presentation.

Recommended readings

There are no reference books. However, two or three journal articles will be provided by the teacher.
