General physics: Mechanics - Partim Math [SPHYB124]

  • 8 credits
  • 55h+24h
  • 1st quarter
Language of instruction: French / Français

Learning outcomes

This course is intended for students in the first year of study for a Bachelor's degree in mathematical sciences, The aim of this course is to describe the basic notions useful for all physicochemical phenomena. This part of the general physics course focuses on the mechanics of the material point and the solid. At the end of this course, the student should be able to - Express themselves in writing in correct scientific terms; - Use the formulae, laws and principles of electromagnetism appropriately to analyse and interpret a situation in everyday and/or professional life; - Handle orders of magnitude and units appropriately; - Explain and interpret natural/ everyday phenomena with physical science concepts; - Develop scientific critical thinking and scientific reasoning in response to a problem.

Content

1. Mechanics of the material point. 2. Solid state mechanics. 3. Wave physics. 4. Thermal physics.

Teaching methods

The course is delivered orally with the help of slide shows, computer animations and the lectures are illustrated by ad hoc scientific experiments performed in front of the students and by videos. The slideshows are accessible via the webcampus online platform. The animations projected on a large screen are also available on the webcampus online platform. Participatory teaching is encouraged via smartphone application or similar activity.

Evaluations

In November: formative evaluation via the online work and collaboration platform (webcampus). The examination is closed book. The subject matter covered by the assessment includes everything that will be covered in the course. The exam can also be taken in June and August if the student does not pass the exam in January. Students are required to attend the practical sessions. The mark for the practical sessions is 20% of the final mark. To obtain a final grade, the student must present all parts of the exam (course, TD and TP).
