  • 3 credits
  • 22h
  • 1st quarter
Language of instruction: English

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will be able :

- to propose new applied synthetic microbiology approaches

- to be familiar with some applied aspects of microbiology, given by invited experts

Objectives

This course addresses a large panel of biotechnological and industrial applications involving prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms and stresses the importance of these microorganisms in health, food and environmental applications.

Content

The content of this course will depend on the field of expertise of the invited speakers and may slightly vary from year to year.

Teaching methods

At each session, one specific topic will be addressed by an invited speaker from the industry or from applied research labs. The students will also have the opportunity to visit a company (usually a brewery).

The students will also be prompted to read the scientific literature in a selected field related to applied microbiology.

Evaluations

  • Maximum 7 days after each session, a report (max 1 page, pdf format) will have to be uploaded on webcampus. This report will have to address the general and scientific contexts and the molecular aspects of the microbiology related to the treated topic. The reports will account for 50% of the final grade
  • At the end of the first semester, groups composed of 2 students will be asked to present in 10 minutes an applied microbiology project of their choice supported by scientific literature and by the content of course. This project will account for 50% of the final grade.
