Course 2024-2025

Biochemistry of domestic animals II [SMEDB306]

  • 4 credits
  • 30h
  • 1st quarter
Language of instruction: French / Français

Learning outcomes

Good knowledge of cellular metabolism and its regulation

Objectives

Objectives

The aim of the teaching unit, SMEDB306, is the build upon the knowledge acquired in the teaching unit SMEDB205 (now SMEDB200), to further the students knowledge of cellular metabolism.

In SMEDB306, we will cover the following chapters :

  • Regulation of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism
  • Amino acid metabolism
  • Nucleotide metabolism
  • Heme metabolism
  • Metabolism of complex lipids ( sphingolipids, sterols and eicosanoids…)
  • Lipid transport

To our knowledge, all students registered for this course have already carried out the practical work. They will therefore not have to redo the practicals this academic year 2023-2024. However, a revision session will be organised for students who must retake the practical work exam in December 2023.

Content

Teaching unit SMEDB306 completes the study of metabolism begun in teaching units SVETB113 and SMEDB205. The description of the main pathways of intermediary metabolism is accompanied by examples describing various biochemical dysfunctions and their metabolic repercussions.

The teaching unit SMEDB306 contains the following main chapters:

- regulation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism

- Amino acid metabolism

- nucleotide metabolism

- heme metabolism

- metabolism of glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, terpenes, sterols and eicosanoids

- lipoprotein metabolism and lipid transport

To the best of our knowledge, all students enrolled on this course have already completed the practical work in the laboratory. They will therefore not have to repeat them this academic year 2023-2024. However, a revision session will be organised for students who have to sit the practical work exam again in December 2023.

Prerequisites

Biochimie des animaux domestiques I [SMEDB200]

Teaching methods

The SMEDB306 unit will be taught in the form of a flipped classroom by Michel Jadot and Marc Hennequart. Video clips will be made available to students and audience sessions will be organised by Michel Jadot and Marc Hennequart in the form of questions and answers.

An incentive system will be set up to encourage students to participate actively in flipped classes. The details of this measure will be worked out in the auditorium, in consultation with the students or their representatives.

Evaluations

Students who did not pass the Practical Work exam during the 2022-2023 academic year will have to retake the practical work exam in December 2023. The grade for the SMEDB306 teaching unit will correspond to the mark obtained in the theoretical exam and the mark obtained during the practical exam with a weighting of 17/3 (17 for the theoretical part, 3 for the practical part).
For students who passed the practical work exam in June 2023, the mark for the SMEDB306 teaching unit will only take into account the points obtained during the theoretical exam of December 2023. In other words, the grade obtained in practical work exam of June 2023 will not be carried over. However, upon their request, they can retake the practical work exam in December 2023. The weighting 17/3 (17 for the theoretical part, 3 for the TP part) will then be applied.

Theoretical exam

Written exam containing multiple choice questions and/or open ended questions prepared by Michel Jadot and Marc Hennequart.

Practical work

Students who are not exempt from practical work will not have to repeat the experiments in the laboratory but they will have to retake the practical work exam in December 2023. This will be a written exam which will focus on problem solving and the application of laboratory techniques covered in the practical work. A revision session will be offered to them in November. The grade they obtain will be added to the theoretical mark with a weighting of 17/3 (Theory exam/Practical work exam).
If students wish to retake the practical exam despite having obtained the exemption in 2023 (or before) or if they did not complete the exercises in the laboratory last year for a personal reason, they must notify Isabelle Hamer at the start of the term.
Students who will have to take the theoretical examination of Biochemistry of Domestic Animals II in the second session will also have to retake the practical work exam if they obtained a grade lower than 10/20 in the first session. The grade for the teaching unit will be calculated using the same 17/3 weighting and will include the practical work exam grade obtained in the second session.
