Learning outcomes

  • To strengthen the methods of geographical information analysis (spatial, thematic and temporal aspects)
  • Raise students' awareness of good use of data for geographical analysis
  • Learn to work in a team in solving a societal problem requiring the use of GIS

Objectives

The objective is to let the students lead a research project as a team. The project includes all the steps of a typical GIS project, from the conception and data collection to the interpretation of results and conclusions.

Content

During their project, students analyse a concrete situation for which the use of GIS is essential.

Exercises description

Team work on a societal question requiring the use of GIS.


Teaching methods

The teaching unit includes 55h of practical work.

Evaluations

The practical work is divided in a mid-term intermediate report (1/3 of the final note), a final report and an oral defense of the work (2/3 of the final note). Students will be individually evaluated at the oral defense.

The evaluation in second session consists of a new personal version of the work, improved based on recommendations made following the first version.
