English III (level B2 minimum) [SELVB305]

  • 3 credits
  • 30h
  • 1st and 2nd quarter
Language of instruction: English
Teacher: Dupal Jeremie

Learning outcomes

Reading Comprehension (B2+): Students can read with a high degree of autonomy, adapting the reading mode and speed to different texts and objectives. They possess a broad and active reading vocabulary but may still encounter difficulties with infrequent expressions.

Listening Comprehension (B2+): Students understand oral messages on various subjects, whether familiar or not, related to personal, social, academic, and professional life. Only major obstacles such as loud noise, complex speech, or idiomatic expressions limit their comprehension. They grasp the main ideas of complex speeches, including technical topics in their field, provided they are relatively familiar and well-structured.

Oral Production (B2): Students can deliver detailed presentations on a range of topics related to their area of interest, developing and justifying ideas with supporting points and relevant examples.

Objectives

The main objective of this course is oral production with and without interaction. The targeted level is B2/B2+, as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

At the end of this course, students will be able to give a clear and systematic presentation on a topic related to their field of specialization. They will be able highlight significant points and relevant elements. They will also be able to express their point of view, logically connect arguments, and provide relevant examples.

Content

The course offers various activities aimed at actively participating in small group conversations or debates and delivering a brief oral presentation. Some activities will also aim to enhance the comprehension of texts and audio-visual content related to scientific topics.

Prerequisites

English II (level B1 and above) [SELVB205]

Teaching methods

The first term will be dedicated to building confidence and developing communication skills in interaction. Before each session, students will have to prepare a portion of the material that will serve as the basis for guided oral expression. Oral activities will take place in small groups under the supervision of the instructor.

The second term will focus on structured oral presentations. After theoretical coaching on presentation strategies and techniques, each student will be required to deliver their own oral presentation on a topic related to their field of expertise.

Evaluations

  1. Written exam in the January session (40%)
  • Listening and/or reading comprehension exercises on material related to the topics covered in the first semester;
  • Questions on vocabulary and grammar covered in the course and worked on independently in the first semester.
  1. Continuous assessment during the second term (35%)
  • Oral presentation on a technical topic (+ abstract).
  1. Oral exam in the June session (25%)
  • Discussion with your teacher based on the course topics.
  1. August/September session

If a student does not achieve an overall average of 10/20 in June, he/she will have to retake the parts in which he/she failed in the August/September session. It is important to note that if a part of the assessment that was below 10/20 in June is not retaken in August/September, the grade for that part will not be retained, and a score of 0 will be assigned.

Please be aware that for both the June and August/September sessions, students must have completed all parts of the assessment and cannot fail in more than two different parts in order to pass the course. If a student obtains an average of 10/20 with three failing grades or did not complete one of the assessment components, a symbolic grade of 9/20 will be assigned.

Warning : please note that the success of this teaching unit does not lead to certification.
