Course 2022-2023

Advanced Biological Chemistry [SCHIM105]

  • 6 credits
  • 36h+24h
  • 1st quarter
Language of instruction: French / Français

Learning outcomes

This course describes, in an integrated fashion, the biological chemistry of the main classes of biomolecules. The synthesis and the biosynthesis of these molecules will be discussed, but also their use as therapeutics. The second part is aimed to understand how a cell reacts to its environment, to stimuli recognized by receptors and then develops an adaptive response. The main notions related to bio-orthogonal chemistry are also described.

Content

- DNA and RNA structure - Design and synthesis of nucleosides as antiviral agents - targeting DNA for the development of anticancer drugs - peptide synthesis - Polyketides biosynthesis (doxorubicine and erythromycine) - Aldolases - Cofactors in biochemistry : FAD, NADH, thiamine diphosphate, AcCoA - Biosynthesis of aromatic (the shikimate pathway) and aliphatic aminoacids - biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids - receptors with 7 transmembrane domains, PKA et PKC - metabolites from arachidonic acid and inflammation - growth factors and cancer - insulin and diabetis - Bio-orthogonal chemistry.
