Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the future pharmacist should be able to:
- understand the indications and rational use of medicines, taking account of pathophysiological aspects and the specific features of the patient concerned (co-morbidities, co-medications, etc);
- situate the medicines prescribed for these indications within the therapeutic framework (medicinal and non-medicinal);
- understanding and correctly assessing the desired effects and the conditions for achieving them, as well as the adverse effects of the drugs in question and any other problems associated with pharmacotherapy (drug interactions, inadequate dosage, etc)
- communicate effectively with patients and nursing staff.

Objectives

To give the future pharmacist (in a pharmacy or hospital/clinician) an insight into the use of medicines in real clinical situations.

PART 1: INTRODUCTION TO PHARMACOTHERAPY

- Medicines for diseases of the digestive system
- Drugs for diseases of the respiratory system
- Drugs for blood and coagulation disorders 
- Antibiotics
- Pain and inflammation management
- Pharmacotherapy for osteoporosis and menopausal disorders
- Management of migraine and other headaches
- Medication for sleep disorders
- Management of acute and chronic pain
- Genitourinary system
- Hormonal system

PART 3: ANALYSIS OF CLINICAL CASES

Exercises description

Tutorials will focus on the discussion of examples of clinical cases and field situations. Active participation in these sessions is mandatory and essential.

Teaching methods

Students will be provided with full course notes. The slides presented during the oral course will also be available on webcampus. Sample exam questions will be provided at the beginning of the course. 

Evaluations

Oral and written examination in the form of short open-ended questions (SOQs) and/or MCQs and oral presentation/discussion of clinical cases.                                                                                                                                    
 
Active participation in seminars + entrance exams at each seminar.
