Course 2024-2025

Introduction to galenics [MPHAB311]

  • 3 credits
  • 20h
  • 1st quarter
Language of instruction: French / Français

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, the student should master the implication of the main physicochemical parameters of commonly encountered active ingredients and excipients.

Objectives

The objective of this course is to understand the implication of the main physico-chemical parameters of active ingredients and excipients in the formulations of mixtures, solutions, suspensions or emulsions. Particular attention will also be paid to the basic calculations necessary for the realization of these formulations (triturations, isotonicity, solutions, etc).

Content

The main properties of substances (active ingredients) in solid state, in solution or in dispersed systems will be discussed in relation to the consequences from a biopharmaceutical and biotechnological point of view.

Teaching methods

The student will be provided with full lecture notes. The slides presented in the oral course will also be available on webcampus. Sample examination questions will be provided at the end of the course. Exercise sessions will also be conducted to familiarise the student with problems encountered in pharmacy practice.

Evaluations

Written examination with open questions and possible MCQs. The first part will be based on basic calculation exercises necessary for the realisation of formulations (an incorrect answer to this first part will result in a direct failure of the whole subject of this teaching unit).
