Learning outcomes

Elements of theoretical competence allowing the diagnostic and therapeutic management of the usual cardiac pathologies in accordance with international recommendations. Knowledge of the pathophysiological bases and clinical evidence supporting diagnostic strategies and treatments of these diseases.

Objectives

To understand the influence of risk factors and the mechanisms involved in the development of atherosclerosis and its consequences. To know and understand the preventive and curative treatment of the main clinical syndromes related to atherosclerosis and its consequences both at the cardiac and peripheral levels. To be able to react adequately to a vital cardiological emergency, beyond the first aid gestures. Detect structural cardiac pathologies, particularly valvular ones, and know how to follow them up. To understand the main surgical techniques used in cardiovascular pathology, their indications, risks and results. To know and understand the main rhythm and conduction disorders as well as the interest of anti-arrhythmic medication and pacemakers; to be able to initiate treatment and ensure its follow-up. To be able to detect congenital heart disease, understand its management and be able to collaborate in its follow-up.

Content

Cardiac and vascular semiology Atherosclerosis: risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical consequences and prevention. Coronary disease: pathophysiology, diagnostic approach and treatment of acute and chronic conditions. Arterial hypertension. Differential diagnosis of chest pain. Cardiomyopathies. Diseases of the pericardium. Chronic and acute heart failure, systolic and diastolic. Pathologies of the aorta. Peripheral arterial and venous pathologies. Rhythmology: diagnostic and therapeutic management of the main rhythm and conduction disorders. Assessment of syncope. Paediatric cardiology: pathophysiological mechanisms, symptoms, diagnostic work-up and therapeutic strategy of congenital heart diseases; specificity of cardiac pathologies in children. Valvulopathies : Pathophysiology, symptoms, diagnostic work-up and therapeutic strategy including calculation of surgical risk scores. Surgical techniques and follow-up of the operated patient. Cardiological aspects of tumour pathologies. Anatomy and cardiovascular pathology: description by image of the mechanisms and consequences of the main cardiac and vascular pathologies.

Evaluations

Written examination with multiple choice and short open questions The exact modalities of the evaluation are subject to change when the examination timetable is drawn up, depending on the practical constraints that the faculty administration may face, or in the event of illness/force majeure/emergency with a placement, preventing the student from taking the examination on the date initially scheduled.
