Course 2023-2024

Medical microbiology [MMEDB309]

  • 6 credits
  • 52h+12h
  • 1st quarter
Language of instruction: French / Français

Learning outcomes

To acquire a basic knowledge of the main micro-organisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites) responsible for pathologies in human medicine. Understand their epidemiology, physiophatology, diagnosis and certain control measures such as vaccines. To know the basic mechanisms of virulence of micro-organisms and how to diagnose the main infectious diseases in the laboratory (e.g. to be able to read a gram stain and recognise some important pathogens such as pneumococcus). Demonstrate a spirit of synthesis and know the subject in a transversal way (e.g. cite the germs responsible for bacterial meningitis). Learn some concepts of epidemiology and pathogen control.

Objectives

To achieve the learning outcomes defined above in order to have the useful and necessary tools for learning infectious diseases (Master) and for practice during clinical placements.

Content

Review of the main pathogens, bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, classified according to their biological and virulence characteristics. Links between the clinic and the microbiology laboratory to train the future doctor to request appropriate microbiological analyses in his future practice

Prerequisites

Biologie [MBIOB105] et Immunologie générale [MMEDB205]

Co-requisites

Immunopathologie [MMEDB308]

Teaching methods

Audience course with interactive cases (clinical vignettes and continuous knowledge assessment using the voting system). Practical course (microbiology laboratory). Attention: Participation in the practical exercises is compulsory. In case of absence from the practical sessions, 2 points will automatically be deducted from the final microbiology exam score.

Evaluations

The exam is written, in the form of MCQs and short open-ended questions and answers (SOQs). There are 20 MCQ questions (-0.25 for wrong answers, 0 for abstentions and +1 for right answers) and 10 SORT questions (without negative marking) which are worth half the total marks. One of the questions in the exam will be on the PT material. Under certain conditions, the examination format is subject to change.

Recommended readings

The syllabus (PDF available on webcampus) is updated progressively. Course slides are available on webcampus as well as recorded lectures via Teams during distance learning during the COVID-19 epidemic. Reference book (optional) can be recommended: Medical Microbiology Ninth Edition. Murray 2020 (online access included with Student Consult option).
