Introduction to medical statistics [MMEDB283]

  • 4 credits
  • 24h+15h
  • 1st quarter
Language of instruction: French / Français

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students should be able to: A1: carry out simple data analysis using a spreadsheet A2: understand the main statistical concepts in a scientific article

Objectives

Knowledge in the biomedical field is constantly evolving through scientific research in which statistical data analysis is central. The objective of this course is to provide the student with the statistical concepts necessary to critically read the biomedical literature.

Teaching methods

The reference book presents the concepts to be known. The theoretical course is based on lectures as well as interactive methods presenting and illustrating important concepts. The course slides are available after the course. The practical sessions allow students to analyse some real data sets by themselves. Regular work is expected from the student to be able to benefit from the explanations given in the course. Question and answer times are scheduled throughout the year during the theory course.

Evaluations

The assessment of the A1 learning outcome is done out of session during the practical sessions. There is no second session for the assessment of the practical work. The assessment of the A2 learning outcome is done by means of a written examination in session. The examination consists of multiple choice questions and open questions. The final grade is the sum of the TP grade (which is worth 6/20 of the final grade) and the written exam grade (which is worth 14/20 of the final grade).
