Language of instruction: French / Français

Learning outcomes

The human physiology courses are intended to provide an understanding of the pathophysiology of diseases, their causes, progression and treatment. To do this, it is necessary to understand the normal functioning of the organs classically grouped into systems (respiratory, cardiovascular, renal, digestive, etc.). We keep this typical classification. The course MMEDB219 is devoted to the physiology (and introduction to the physiopathology) of the endocrine and reproductive systems.

Objectives

To master the normal physiology of the endocrine glands and functions related to reproduction, illustrating them with elements of physiopathology. These objectives will be detailed in the course.

Content

The systems covered are the major functions of the endocrine glands: the hypothalamus-pituitary system, thyroid function, adrenal function, functions of the endocrine pancreas and adipose tissues, phospho-calcium regulation and functions of the reproductive organs: gonads and uterine mucosa.

Teaching methods

1. Ex cathedra course, based on a slide show. The slide show is available on Webcampus. 2. Workshops (attendance compulsory except for bisseurs) in groups dealing with glycemic control

Evaluations

The evaluation will take place in two forms: • Continuous assessment in the form of questions requiring a cross-sectional understanding of the material covered in the endocrinology course. • A written examination: in the form of MCQs and/or QROCs and/or open questions on topics covered in lectures and practical work. The examination is divided into two parts, one part designed to assess the understanding of the subject matter covered in endocrinology (75% of the overall mark) and another part designed to assess the understanding of the subject matter covered in reproductive physiology (25% of the overall mark). There is no specific examination for the practical and practical work part of the course, but a mark is awarded for work done during certain practical and practical sessions (contributing to a maximum of 10% of the overall mark for the course). In the event of unjustified absence from the practical or practical work, a negative assessment will be given to the teacher responsible. For bachelor students, the mark of the theoretical exam contributes to 100% of the mark of the teaching unit. The exact modalities of the assessment are subject to change when the examination timetable is drawn up, depending on the practical constraints that the faculty administration may face. A score of 10/20 or higher in the examination allows credits to be awarded for the course unit. Only the overall mark is taken into consideration. There is therefore no partial exemption for any part of the course. An overall mark of less than 10/20 means that the entire course unit, i.e. both endocrinology and reproductive physiology, must be repeated at the next session. The final score is modulated negatively by • one or more serious deficiencies in defined course objectives, as revealed by the answers to the QROCs and/or open questions in the examination. • Unjustified absence from practical and directed work sessions (TP-TDs). The mark out of 20 is reduced by 1/20 (of the overall mark for the teaching unit) for each absence from a practical and supervised work session, unless exempted (see below). In the case of absence for which the justification is justified and verifiable, an alternative solution to this penalty will be discussed with the teachers. Terms and conditions for granting credits Credits for the course are earned when a mark of 10/20 or higher is obtained (taking into account any decimals; a mark of 9.6/20 is therefore well below 10/20 and is reduced to 9/20). A session of examination papers will be offered at the end of the session, after the deliberation. This session is intended to clarify the nature of the errors made. At the end of the session, the examination grade is never changed.
