  • quarter
Language of instruction: Dutch / Nederlands

Learning outcomes

The student acquires the skills necessary to carry out scientific work independently.

Objectives

Building on the skills acquired during the previous years of study, the final year's work in Dutch literature enables students to improve their skills in - the selection of a research topic and the precise formulation of one or more research questions - bibliographical research in relation to the research topic chosen by the student in consultation with his/her supervisor; - analysis and synthesis of scientific literature in relation to a research topic; - the establishment of a research or analysis methodology in line with the research questions on the one hand and the scientific literature on the other; - data collection, analysis, organisation and interpretation; - the correct use of bibliographic references in the text and the composition of a bibliography; - writing a scientific text in Dutch. For the preparation and supervision of the student see "pedagogy".

Content

In consultation with his/her supervisor, the student chooses a theme which he/she develops and deepens in a personal and original way. The student establishes a timetable for the synthesis of the scientific literature, the definition and implementation of the methodology (data collection, analysis and processing), and the different stages of the writing process. The body of the TFC, excluding appendices, tables/figures (if applicable) and bibliography, is approximately 7500 words.

Prerequisites

Nederlandse tekstanalyse II [LNRLB206]

Teaching methods

The TFC is part of the continuity of both the academic and target language training offered in Germanic Languages and Humanities and is part of our policy of individual and differentiated support. Thus, the student is prepared for bibliographic research before the TFC by a training course specially designed for students in Germanic Languages and Literature by the Moretus Plantin University Library, followed in Block 2, whose reference material remains available throughout the course and he/she is supervised during the TFC by the promoter in addition to being able to benefit from the library's "book a librarian" service. For the methodological and writing aspects, the student is prepared through the courses and exercises in Block 2 aimed at developing academic writing, analysis and critical reflection and the methodological initiation to scientific research in the framework of the courses Nederlandse Tekstanalyse I & II, Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Literatuur I & II. During the academic year of the TFC, the student is followed by the promoter individually and/or in working groups between students working on similar themes or methodologies. Regular exchanges with the promoter support the process. In addition, the student receives feedback on the various stages of the research work, from the heuristic phase to the second draft.

Evaluations

The TFE is assessed according to the achievement of its objectives (as defined above). In addition to the scientific content and the personal and critical contribution of the student to the research (=70% of the mark), the quality and relevance of the written formulation (including references and bibliographic conventions) are also assessed (=30% of the mark). The expected level of written competence in the target language is C1 according to the CEFR, applied to an academic register.
