Research skills in linguistics

Autonomy and critical approach in the scientific implementation of a small scale research project.

Objectives

This course is given in Dutch and focusses on a sociolinguistic topic anchored in a (Dutch / Belgian) socio-cultural and political context. During the (small scaled) classes, exercices or tutorials, students discover, analyse and discuss in an integrated and critical way the topic.

This approach allows the students to cross-fertilise, transfer and complement the skills and knowledge acquired during previous courses of linguistics, and to develop his/her command of the Dutch language (both the oral and written competences).

A study visit to the Netherlands serves as the backbone of this integrated project.

At the language level, with a pre-requisite of CEFR level C1 in receptive skills and B2 in productive skills (acquired through LNRL B201), the students should reach, at the end of the course, a level of C1 to C2 in receptive skills and B2+ in productive skills (cf. https://erk-nederlands.taalunie.org).

Content

This year's course will focus on the multilingual situation in Friesland (Fryslân), the only officially bilingual (Frisian/Dutch) province in the Netherlands. 

Participation in any activity organised by the department within or outside the university, as part of this course, is an integral part of the training and is therefore considered compulsory.

Teaching methods

The course (in Dutch) and the study trip are based on the interaction with and between the students, using visual material (ppt, audio/video), scientifc and press articles, reports, ... The active participation (including presentations) by the students is mandatory, both during the classes and the exercices.

Evaluations

An oral presentation of the (small scale) research project (20%)

Portfolio containing the written paper reporting on the (small scale) research project, final version of the ppt presentation, other relevant documents (60%). 

Oral examination: presentation and 'defence' of the portfolio, questions on the contextualisation and the materials discussed during the course (20%).

The expected level of Dutch is at least B2+ for productive level and C1 to C2 for receptive level (see https://rm.coe.int/16802fc3a8 or https://erk-nederlands.taalunie.org).

AI will not be used to produce texts or content in either the formative or summative assessment phases, unless explicitly indicated by the supervisor.
