6. To acquire the techniques of analysis and interpretation of historical sources, as well as a reflexive and critical awareness in the practice of the historical approach 7. Learn how to conduct a research question in history and master the tools and working methods specific to the discipline

Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide the student with methodological tools for interpreting iconographic sources. The aim is to identify the specificity of such documents (through knowledge of the codes specific to visual communication) and to weigh their complementarity with the "classic" sources of historical criticism.

Content

The course, structured around a chronological axis, will present various iconographic documents (sculptures, posters, caricatures, photographs, documentaries, films, television programmes, etc.). Using concrete examples, the aim will be to place these images in their context, to present their formal characteristics, and above all to identify the interest of such documents for a better understanding of the different periods of history.
