Course 2024-2025

Introduction to law [LHISB222]

  • 3 credits
  • 30h
  • 1st quarter
Language of instruction: French / Français

Learning outcomes

A good knowledge of French is necessary to understand the course and pass the exam.

Objectives

The objective of the course is to give a general overview of contemporary law and to describe the originality of the legal approach. It is important to understand that law forms a whole, a coherent system which has its own vocabulary, its particular reasoning and its internal logic, while at the same time being a mirror of social issues and changes.

Content

Although each of us has at least an elementary knowledge of the law, through our family relationships, our profession or our leisure activities, this knowledge is usually partial and above all fragmentary. But the law, more than a set of rules, is first and foremost a way of thinking about relationships with others. To highlight this reality, the course defines contemporary law and its different meanings (positive law, natural law, subjective rights), before analysing its classifications (public law, private law) and its sources (legislation, custom, case law, doctrine).

Teaching methods

Lectures in which the various issues are discussed in an illustrated manner and which tend to favour, as much as possible, interaction between teacher and students.

Evaluations

Written examination with a maximum duration of two hours. The evaluation criteria are as follows: • precision of definitions, • logical structure of answers (reasoning, justifications and internal consistency), • quality of presentation (vocabulary, spelling and syntax).

Recommended readings

A syllabus containing all the material covered in the course is offered to students at the beginning of the first term.
