Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to: Adopt a holistic view of the impacts of technologies on individuals, the environment, and economic activity Adopt critical thinking about technological development Understand the opportunities that technological development offers to support sustainable development

Objectives

The course will address the following main objectives Understanding of the concept of sustainable development Understanding the multiple impacts of technology on human activity (economy and society) and the environment in which it is embedded

Content

The course will cover the economic, societal and environmental impact of technologies from a cost-benefit analysis perspective. Examples of questions addressed in the course are: What is the environmental cost of technologies and how can it be measured? How can the use of technologies have a positive impact on the environment? What is at stake in the digital divide? How do new technologies influence the world of industry?


Teaching methods

The course will take the form of ex-cathedra sessions in which theoretical concepts will be discussed and illustrated by examples and case studies.

Evaluations

The assessment is based on a written examination on the theoretical concepts covered in the course.

Recommended readings

The content of the course is based on scientific articles, the references of which will be provided at the end of each session.
