Course 2024-2025

Sociology [EFASB321]

  • 6 credits
  • 45h
  • 1st quarter
Language of instruction: French / Français

Learning outcomes

- understand the thinking of the 6 authors selected - know how to use sociological concepts to analyse empirical material from contemporary societies.

Objectives

Students should be able to analyse materials describing fragments of contemporary society using the contributions of the sociological theories studied.

Content

The course allows the discovery of the thought of six major authors of sociology around two themes: individual identity (P.Bourdieu, E.Goffman) and the social link (M.Weber, F.Tönnies, J.Godbout and R.Sennett). Two transversal questions, that of gender and the ecological transition, will be addressed to the selected authors.

Teaching methods

The course is partly given at a distance: students discover the subject by themselves with the reference book and by being able to use the webcampus forums to ask their questions. Face-to-face time is reserved for answering questions and doing exercises.

Evaluations

During the year, students complete a portfolio of exercises which are evaluated by the teacher and some of which can be improved by the student. The final evaluation is based on five of the six exercises completed during the year and chosen by the student.
