Economics and Management of the Non-Market Sector [EFAEM407]

  • 5 credits
  • 30h
  • 2nd quarter
Language of instruction: French / Français

Learning outcomes

This course aims to provide the economic understanding and managerial tools for managing an entity (or a group of entities) in the non-profit sector: hospitals, nursing homes, educational institutions, universities, administrations, etc.

Content

The first part aims to draw from economic theory the essential lessons for understanding the environment and the logic of decision making in these services. On this basis, the managerial challenge can be better understood. Next, the contributions of the modern managerial approach are explored, illustrated by numerous examples. In addition to the overall logic of the approach, cost management and budgetary management, the application of marketing techniques, efficiency and quality management are addressed. The course combines concepts, methods and concrete applications.

Teaching methods

Theoretical presentations and practical case studies are alternated in order to complement each other. The case studies are based on real-life experiences of non-market services. The approaches and tools used are the most modern, but do not require a particular background. The presentation will be resolutely interactive.

Evaluations

The examination will focus exclusively on the subjects taught orally. It will be written. It will cover three aspects: • Knowledge and understanding of concepts, strategies, tools and methods. • The ability to analyse and synthesise a concrete case seen in the course. • The ability to make strategic and operational recommendations.

Recommended readings

Students will be provided with a detailed outline of the material and a copy of the slides presented during the course. Teacher availability Baudouin Meunier receives students by appointment: office 306a on the 3rd floor; tel. 0475.25.26.27; e-mail: baudouin.meunier@skynet.be
