Learning outcomes

Understanding and use of the concepts and tools essential to qualitative and quantitative methods.

Objectives

The Qualitative and Quantitative Methods for Management course aims to provide students with the essential elements of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. More specifically, the course will be divided into two parts. The first part will present the general characteristics of qualitative approaches and situate them in the overall research process. It will also provide a set of methods and tools for the collection and analysis of qualitative data. The second part is dedicated to quantitative methods. It aims to provide the basic background to undertake empirical analysis projects using econometric and statistical methods. The course will cover simple and multiple linear regression methods, panel data analysis and logit/probit models. Practical work on the software "R" will complete the learning of this second part.

Content

Table of contents : Introduction to qualitative and quantitative research

Part I: Qualitative methods 1. Introduction 2. Research design 3. Qualitative data collection • The basic principles • The different ways of collecting information (individual interviews, focus groups, etc.) 1. Analysis of qualitative data 2. Data control

Part II: Quantitative methods 1. Introduction 2. Simple linear regression model 3. Multiple linear regression model 4. Ordinary Least Squares Entries 5. Discrete choice models 6. Introduction to panel data

Teaching methods

A balance is sought between, on the one hand, ex-cathedra teaching which aims more at the rigorous acquisition of concepts, tools and procedures and, on the other hand, interactive teaching, emphasising confrontation with current events and the student's personal practice, understanding and critical reflection. The practical sessions will allow the application and practice of the methods and techniques (qualitative and quantitative) seen in class. For the quantitative part, the techniques seen in the course will be applied and practised on the computer, using the "R" software. The practical work related to the qualitative part will also support the students in the realization of the written work in group (see evaluation).

Evaluations

The course evaluation consists of :

1/ for the "qualitative methods" part: written group work during the semester (50%). The precise modalities of the group work will be explained during the first course. Attendance and involvement during the practical sessions are also taken into account in the evaluation. In the event of a second session, the mark for the group work and its weighting are retained in the final assessment of the course.

2 /for the "quantitative methods" part (50%): The precise modalities will be explained during the first course.

Successful completion of ECGEB300 requires the successful completion of both parts, "qualitative methods" and "quantitative methods", with a minimum mark of 10/20 for each part.

Recommended readings

Students are given a copy of the slides presented during the course. The students are invited to complete these slides by taking notes.
